You can make a difference
How can you contribute a bit towards sustainability during your travel. Croatia has a reputation of a tourist destination with a preserved and diverse nature, and hope that it will maintain this position in the future
- Enjoy outdoor activities like walking, hiking, running, surfing, swimming, cycling or sailing that leave no carbon footprint and enable you to enjoy the most of Croatian landscape!
- Support local businesses – in Croatia there is a large choice of small family hotels or boutique hotels and villas to choose from. Also many restaurants that promote local and seasonal food and drinks in their menus.
- Say no to date – shells! Date shell harvesting is damage maritime environment by breaking up the rocks, and destroying the natural balance, habitats of numerous animals and other marine organisms. Even though it is prohibited to harvest, to possess or to sell date shell, unfortunately, you can still find them in some restaurants. Please note that these subjects are acting against the law.
- Sustainble use of water - More than 87% of Croatian population uses public water supply system and drinks tap water, which is regularly controlled and conforms to health safety standards.
- Be plastic free - Although the Adriatic Sea and its beaches are cleaned regularly, mainly before and after the tourist season, the amount of garbage generated in the sea becomes too big for small organisations and volunteers to clean it up. Therefore, there is an increasing awareness of marine conservation in each individual.
One of the positive examples in enviromental protection is the island of Zlarin, located near the city of Šibenik. Zlarin is the first plastic-free Croatian island. They have eliminated all single-use plastic items such as plastic bags, cups, plates, cutlery and straws from usage. The project is supported by all the locals, local restaurants, cafes and shops on the island.
